Hi skippers,

I would like to kindly ask the skipper community for assistance regarding routeing with grib data received via iridium satellite phone. Who uses such a system and can give me good advice?

Thanks. Best regards

Hi

I use just such a system. Gribs from Grib.us are great when I have wifi access but via Iridium it is too expensive to wait while the server downloads the file. I use saildocs/sailmail for gribs via email.Note that sailmail does not include precipitation in its free version.  I can then route using Maxsea.

hope this helps

Kevvy,

I was navigator on the '07 transpac and used an Irridium phone via sailmail gribs.  No problem with the sailmail files, but I used a lot of air time just to make a connection.  The phone showed a solid signal but it would take many minutes (and often fail) connecting to the internet.  I used both the remote flat antenna and just holding the phone.  I also used a usb/serial adapter.

Any tricks for a quick connection?

Thanks.

Mark
